Foundation of the Fund

Foundation of the Fund

On 15 July 2005, Rinat Akhmetov founded the charitable organisation Foundation for Development of Ukraine within the corporate social responsibility of SCM (System Capital Management). This became the starting point for Rinat Akhmetov’s systematic charitable activity. The main areas announced at the outset included the nation’s health, family support, targeted assistance, and the development of culture and education.
Commencement of activities in healthcare

Commencement of activities in healthcare

In 2005, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation began systematic work in the medical field, addressing one of the key challenges of that time – chronic underfunding of the healthcare sector in Ukraine. At a time when hospitals were in urgent need of equipment and medicines, the Foundation focused on studying the actual needs of healthcare institutions.

In its first year of activity, preparations for future large-scale projects began: monitoring of the healthcare system was conducted, problems were analysed, and data were collected, which later formed the basis for the Cancer Can Be Cured and Stop Tuberculosis programs launched in 2007-2008.

In 2005, it was also determined that support for children would become one of the Foundation’s main priorities. Personal assistance from Rinat Akhmetov to children in boarding schools and family-type children’s homes eventually grew into the large annual initiative Rinat Akhmetov to Children, which evolved into the extensive systematic assistance program for children Rinat Akhmetov to Children. Since then, this initiative has become a symbol of continuous care for children and their future.

Targeted Assistance program

Targeted Assistance program

This very first systematic program of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation started its work in January 2006 and was aimed at supporting people who found themselves in difficult life circumstances and required urgent assistance and treatment. The program is based on the principle set by Rinat Akhmetov: to help here and now. The Targeted Assistance program became the foundation of Rinat Akhmetov’s personal charitable activities. Often, such assistance to an individual grew into assistance to entire institutions. Numerous important initiatives were carried out as part of implemented projects.
Healthcare:
● new medical and diagnostic equipment was purchased for the city hospital in Luhansk;
● mechanical ventilation devices were procured for four hospitals in Kyiv, Donetsk, and Rivne;
● a general practice outpatient clinic in Staromykhailivka, Donetsk Oblast, was equipped.
Inclusive Education:
● equipment for Braille printing was purchased for the Lviv Polytechnic National University;
● audio courses Lectures for Medical Colleges were developed for students with severe visual impairments;
● the Animated Films for the Blind project was supported, providing access to children’s content for visually impaired children.
Many areas of the Foundation’s activities emerged from the Targeted Assistance program, becoming separate projects that now form part of the Rinat Akhmetov – Saving Lives and Rinat Akhmetov to Children programs.

Fighting COVID-19 in Ukraine project

Rinat Akhmetov was the first to step in to help the country in the fight against COVID-19. To provide systematic support to state hospitals, the Fighting COVID-19 in Ukraine project was launched within the Rinat Akhmetov – Saving Lives program. Together with SCM Group businesses, the Foundation procured and delivered the most essential supplies to Ukrainian medical workers: personal protective equipment, medical equipment, test kits for virus detection, and protective clothing.
A key element of the country’s assistance was the procurement by the Foundation and SCM assets of 219 state-of-the-art ventilators for state hospitals. The Foundation managed to purchase and deliver them to Ukraine despite the global shortage of high-tech medical equipment.
At the personal initiative of Rinat Akhmetov, more than UAH 500 million were allocated to combat COVID-19 in Ukraine. As part of the Fighting COVID-19 in Ukraine project, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation provided assistance to state hospitals in 24 regions of the country. For several years, the Museum operated exclusively in an online format: the stories were published on the portal civilvoicesmuseum.org in the form of videos, audio recordings, and texts. Later, the project expanded into the offline space. Over the years of its operation, the Museum of Civilian Voices has collected nearly 135,000 stories of Ukrainian civilians about the war. Project #CANCERISNOTASENTENCE

In 2021, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, together with VOGUE magazine and with the support of Central Universal Department Store (TsUM) Kyiv, launched the #RAKNEVYROK project. Its main goal is to provide psychological support to Ukrainians with oncological diseases and to help them overcome the illness. The Foundation systematically focuses on the issue of oncology.
#RAKNEVYROK features stories of Ukrainians who have managed to overcome the disease. Their sincere accounts are meant to inspire and support patients who are just beginning their difficult fight against cancer. All the stories share a common message – how important it is, in the process of fighting the illness, to learn to live anew while knowing your diagnosis

By 2024, the Museum of Civilian Voices had collected over 120,000 stories, including testimonies about the events of 2024: shelling, evacuations, and life during the war. The installation combined video, audio, and art objects to convey the tragedy of war and the strength of those who endured it. Over 5,000 people visited the exhibition. For its productive work and significant contribution to preserving Ukraine’s national memory, the Museum received a letter of appreciation from the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine. The VOICES exhibition was also recommended for display in Europe and the USA.
Another important event of 2024 was the documentary project War Diaries: Voices of those who survived and those who did not, based on the real diaries of Mariupol residents Kateryna Savenko and Volodymyr Velychko.

It includes medical rehabilitation (surgeries, treatment, and recovery from injuries) as well as psychological assistance to help children overcome the effects of stress and trauma caused by the war. The Rinat Akhmetov Foundation is the only organization in Ukraine systematically engaged in the rehabilitation of children wounded as a result of hostilities.
In addition, the Foundation works to improve children’s psychological condition through the organization of Blogger Camps – health camps with a focus on psychological rehabilitation. This initiative is part of the Rinat Akhmetov to Children. Peaceful Rest for Children of Ukraine project.
