The epidemic of tuberculosis rapidly spreads in Ukraine, - the Executive Director of the Global Fund

The Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Professor Michel Kazatchkine, at the meeting with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolay Azarov noted that the epidemic of tuberculosis rapidly spreads in Ukraine and Eastern Europe - Central Asia.

Mr. Kazatchkine pointed this out at the meeting of stakeholders held on January 16 in Kiev.

“I drew the attention of the Prime Minister to the fact that the epidemic of tuberculosis spreads very rapidly in Ukraine and in the region”, - said the Executive Director of the Global Fund.

Mr. Kazatchkine said that at the meeting with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health of Ukraine he also raised three important issues: the expansion of substitution therapy programs for drug users, the provision of access to treatment of AIDS and tuberculosis in the penitentiary system and the continuation of funding of the Global Fund programs.

“The Global Fund provided significant funding to Ukraine. From 2003 to 2016 Ukraine will receive 640 million USD”, - said Michel Kazatchkine.
