Film About the Mariupol Drama Theatre Produced in Cooperation With the Museum of Civilian Voices of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation Screened at the Odesa International Film Festival

24.08.2023

Ukrainian film director and producer Yulian Ulybin presented his documentary The Dram about the shelter of the Drama Theatre in Mariupol at the Odesa International Film Festival (OIFF). The film was shown as part of the special section “So we will win!”. The film was created in cooperation with the Museum of Civilian Voices of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, which is a partner of the festival’s documentary section the Film Industry Office.

“Today, the world does not perceive the war as it is. I dream and hope that this film will change something, because there is a detail in it – the drama theatre in Mariupol. It was a planned and clear execution. This is how our aggressor acts,” says Yulian Ulybin. “There are no sensitive graphic scenes, blood, and violence in this film. It is a more artistic approach, as such films are easier to show to the public. I really want this film to be seen in Europe and shown at other famous [film] festivals.”

This year, the Odesa International Film Festival takes place in Chernivtsi from 19 to 26 August. According to the results of the presented selection program of the 14th OIFF, the winner in the category Best full-length documentary film will receive a special prize from the Museum, namely UAH 50,000.

Since 2014, the Museum of Civilian Voices of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has been collecting and keeping the stories of Ukrainian civilians about their experiences during the war. More than 80,000 stories told first-hand have been collected for now. This is the world’s largest archive of stories from witnesses of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The Museum actively supports documentary filmmaking in Ukraine because documentaries are an important way to capture and tell the world about the experiences of Ukrainians during the war. This is a joint mission, within which the Museum organizes thematic events, provides stories collected in its archive as a basis for film plots, etc.
