Oleksandra Paskal Visits UNICEF Office in Nairobi, Kenya, as Part of the Dance of Freedom World Tour
During her visit to Nairobi, Kenya, as part of the Dance of Freedom world tour, 10-year-old Ukrainian gymnast Oleksandra Paskal took part in a series of sporting, educational, and humanitarian events.
An important event was organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in Kenya together with UNICEF. UN officials, diplomats, and representatives of civil society organizations attended the event. Oleksandra spoke with senior officials, told them about Ukraine, and explained how russian aggression has fundamentally changed the lives of millions of Ukrainian children.
“Oleksandra’s story is inspiring and proves that anything is possible. Her determination, perseverance, and courage helped change her life. With proper support, rehabilitation, and help from the people around her, she was able to unlock her potential and today demonstrate her talent and many abilities. She is an example not only for children living with disabilities, but for all children who face difficulties in life,” emphasized Benjamin Meyer, UNICEF Representative in Kenya.
During the event, guests watched a video about Oleksandra Paskal’s story and her return to sport after a serious injury caused by a russian missile strike. The culmination was her Dance of Freedom performance — a symbol of the strength and resilience of Ukrainian children and their belief in a better future.
“When you see a young girl whose spirit has not been broken despite everything that has happened to her, it is very inspiring. I think it gives hope and inspiration to many children who are going through similar challenges today. Sasha has decided to continue doing what she does best,” said Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
As part of her visit, Sasha also met with Kenyan children her age, who gave her a warm welcome with music and various activities. The meeting took place in a sincere and joyful atmosphere.
“Children in Kenya are incredibly cool! They dance so well and are always smiling. I really loved the way they welcomed me — it was incredible,” Oleksandra shared.
The day before, the young gymnast, together with the Ukrainian delegation, met with the National Paralympic Committee of Kenya, where they discussed prospects for cooperation between the Ukrainian and Kenyan Paralympic movements, the development of inclusive sports, and the possibility of implementing joint international initiatives. Sasha also visited Kibera, one of Nairobi’s most impoverished areas, where she spoke with local children. For many of them, the meeting was inspiring: the Ukrainian athlete’s story proves that even after the most difficult challenges, it is possible to return to an active life and believe in oneself.
The international Dance of Freedom project is implemented by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation with the support of FC Shakhtar. Every performance by Sasha is another opportunity to remind the world about Ukrainian children and the price they pay for the war every day.
