From Paris to Tokyo: Young Ukrainian Gymnast with Prosthetic Embarks on International "Dance of Freedom" Tour
10-year-old Ukrainian gymnast Oleksandra Paskal, who lost her leg in a Russian missile strike on the Odesa region, is embarking on an international tour titled "Dance of Freedom." Over the course of two weeks, she will perform across five continents to remind the world that the war in Ukraine continues and that Ukrainian children are still fighting for their future.
Oleksandra's first performance will take place on July 17 in Paris. The tour will then continue to New York on July 20, Rio de Janeiro on July 23, Nairobi on July 27, and will conclude on July 31 in Tokyo. In each city, the young gymnast will present a special dance routine at iconic urban landmarks.
During the "Dance of Freedom" tour, Oleksandra will use dance to share her own story—the story of a Ukrainian child who survived the war but never lost faith in life. In May 2022, Oleksandra's life was changed forever by a Russian missile strike on the Odesa region, which resulted in the loss of her leg. Following extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation, she returned to rhythmic gymnastics, resumed training with a prosthetic limb, and began competing internationally once again.
Today, Oleksandra stands as an example of resilience for thousands of Ukrainians. This year, she won a gold medal at the prestigious Carla’s Rhythmic Cup international tournament in Romania, and in 2025, she was honored with the "Future of Ukraine" state award for her courage, resilience, and strength of spirit.
The "Dance of Freedom" project is implemented by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation with the support of FC Shakhtar, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence. Its goal, through Oleksandra’s story, is to draw the international community's attention to Ukrainian children whose lives have been permanently altered by the war, while showcasing their strength, indomitable spirit, and will to live.
