Supporting Donetsk Regional Tumor Treatment Center

Implementation years: 2009-2015

On 13 June 2013, Donetsk Regional Tumor Treatment Center (DRTTC) officially opened a brachytherapy (sealed source radiotherapy) department, the first and the largest of its kind in Ukraine. Its main distinguishable feature is that it represents the only fully-equipped complex in Ukraine, featuring two brachytherapy machines and all the necessary ancillary equipment. This equipment allowed the department to implement new methodologies previously unavailable in our country, in particular, the interstitial brachytherapy which has the advantage of low probability of complications. The equipment for DRTTC was purchased by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation.

As part of this project, a sealed source radiotherapy block, the first in Ukraine, was opened at Donetsk Cancer Center in accordance with the best international standards. Also, the construction of a DRTTC Radiology Center has begun with the Foundation’s support, but the armed conflict in the Donbas rendered the implementation of this project impossible.
