Mariupol defender Oleksandr Liashok received an apartment from Rinat Akhmetov

Defender of Mariupol Oleksandr Liashok received an apartment of his own through the “At Home” program, implemented by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation in partnership with the “Heart of Azovstal” NGO. The new home gave the serviceman, his wife Olena, and their young daughter an opportunity to make a home of their own and begin a new chapter in their lives after everything they had been through.
Oleksandr is originally from the Kherson region. At the age of 18, he chose to serve in the marines, and with the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he defended Mariupol. In May 2022, together with his fellow servicemen, he broke through to the territory of Azovstal and was later taken captive by russia.
While being held at the Olenivka penal colony, Oleksandr sustained severe shrapnel wounds to his leg and elbow joint as a result of mortar shelling. The defender now has a Group II disability. While undergoing rehabilitation, the defender learned that he was going to become a father. Today, he and his wife are raising their daughter. Now the family has a home of their own.
“Many thanks to Rinat Leonidovych for such a gift, for helping servicemen and those who were in captivity, and for not forgetting us,” Oleksandr Liashok said.
According to the defender, returning from captivity and the birth of his daughter were particularly important events for him. “You knew that you had gone through all of this for a reason, that you had returned, saved your own life, and given new life to another person,” the defender said.
“The ‘At Home’ program is not only about square meters. It is about giving defenders of Mariupol and their families an opportunity to have their own space for living, recovery, and the future. We want defenders, after the trials they have endured, to have not only the necessary support but also the opportunity to build a stable life together with their loved ones,” said Tetiana Kukhotska, Secretary of the Supervisory Board of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation.
The “At Home” program is one of the areas of systematic support for defenders of Mariupol and their families. Having a home of their own is not only a solution to everyday needs for them, but also an important part of the path toward post-traumatic growth — a return to a fulfilling life after combat and captivity.
