The Danish Demining Group held a session on mine risk for children returned to Ukraine after being taken to russia at the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation's Blogger Camp

05.02.2024

During the winter session of the Blogger Camp organised by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation in Zakarpattia, children took part in a mine risk session. It was conducted by representatives of the Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding at the Danish Refugee Council. The session was held in an interactive online format.

This session has an important feature: children who were illegally taken to russia and managed to return to Ukraine have a rest and rehabilitation at the Camp. The Foundation paid maximum attention to these children and provided the first steps of their psychological and physical rehabilitation after their experiences.

"I learned a lot about mine safety at the masterclass organised by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation. I think it is very useful at a time like this. We were told about the mines themselves and how to avoid getting into a minefield. If such circumstances arise, I now know exactly what to do. We were told very interesting things, we were asked questions, we were talked to. There was a lively dialogue, and I really liked it,” Valeriia Halych, the session participant from Sievierodonetsk, Luhansk region, said.

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organisation that aims to protect IDPs and help find durable solutions to the problems of displaced persons. The Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (HDP) is a division of the DRC that works in the field of mine action, including humanitarian demining. HDP helps people to get adapted as safely as possible to new living conditions in territories where explosive ordnance and mines may be present.

The DRC representatives worked in Ukraine in 1998-2000, 2007-2013, assisting Crimean Tatars returning from Central Asia, building the capacity of government agencies working with refugees, and successfully implementing the Protection of Refugee and Asylum Seeking Children Programme. In November 2014, the DRC resumed its activities in Ukraine in response to the country's humanitarian needs.

As part of the “Rinat Akhmetov for Children. Peaceful Recreation for Children of Ukraine” project, almost 4.9 thousand children from all over Ukraine affected by the war improved their health, rested, and received qualified psychological help at the Blogger Camp.
