Coronavirus in Ukraine: Rinat Akhmetov Foundation donates medical equipment to fight the most dangerous complications in the infected along with personal protection equipment for medical professionals to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine

11.03.2020

Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has donated medical equipment necessary for effective treatment of coronavirus COVID-19 complications and its distribution prevention to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (MoH), namely:

- SERVO-I UNIVERSAL and SERVO AIR artificial lung ventilation (ALV) devices — 3 pieces of each;

- EgoZlin biobag EBV–30/40 isolation mobile box for transportation of contagious patients — 1 piece;

- biological and chemical protection suit with EOBO-20 EgoZlin filter ventilation unit — 1 piece;

- disposable protective combination suits — 400 pieces;

- infrared thermometers with laser pointer — 80 pieces;

- protective face masks — 10,000 pieces.

For emergency response operations against outbreak around the country, the Foundation has made the list of medical equipment and personal protection means with the assistance of the MoH.

Also, the recommendations of the World Health Organisation regarding medical equipment for the countries that have faced the threat of coronavirus have been taken into account.

‘The WHO is monitoring the medicines availability considering the fact that coronavirus distribution may lead to a collapse in drug supply. Also, the list of required equipment has been made which includes artificial lung ventilation devices and oxygen supply systems’, highlighted Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO.

The special equipment which the Foundation has donated to the MoH is the most real opportunity for the patients with severe coronavirus complications to survive. Specifically, the unique isolation mobile box reliably prevents infection distribution form contagious persons. At that, the box is equipped with six isolated arms ensuring safe approach to patient for medical professionals.

According to Viktor Lyashko, Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine, Chief Sanitary Officer of Ukraine, when the coronavirus complications cause severe lung impairment, only ALV devices and oxygen concentrator are able to safe a patient’s life.

ALV device facilitates respiration as well as maintains lung function in case of respiratory arrest saturating the blood with oxygen. Significant is the fact that the equipment donated by the Foundation does not require oxygen flasks as oxygen is produced by a mobile concentrator under any conditions. It is also worth noting the feature of SERVO AIR which ensures independent operation of this apparatus without power supply for at least one hour.

‘The Foundation was the first to respond to the coronavirus distribution threat. At the discretion of Rinat Akhmetov, within the shortest possible period of time, the equipment for effective treatment of complications in coronavirus patient as well as protective equipment for medical professionals have been purchased. Today, we have provided assistance which is meant to serve at the country-level. These are a unique mobile box, special protective suit which is constructed as a space-type suit, and mobile special medical equipment, namely, artificial lung ventilation devices and accessory oxygen concentrators which, according to medical professionals, are of essential importance in the new threatening environment. If needed, these unique devices can be delivered to any part of the country in the shortest time possible’, reported Natalya Yemchenko, member of the Foundation Supervisory Board.

The experts have stressed that the significance of the assistance provided by the Foundation cannot be overstated.

Mykhailo Radutsky, Head of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Public Health and Medical Assistance, noted that Rinat Akhmetov Foundation is always the first one to provide necessary assistance to Ukraine. This is particularly important today when the whole world and our country faced a threat of coronavirus distribution:

‘This present time, when not only Ukraine but the whole world faces the pandemic threat and when there is a shortage of equipment and protective means to fight coronavirus, it is extremely important for Ukraine that socially conscious persons such as Rinat Akhmetov and his Foundation render assistance to their country. Today, the Foundation has donated us protective means, protective equipment for both patients and medical professionals, artificial lung ventilation devices for oxygen therapy which are very much needed for our country. Such contribution of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation in public health is simultaneously a contribution to economic development, financial solvency of Ukraine and its safety as people are the most important wealth of a country’.

‘The members of the Operation Headquarters of the MoH have worked out in details the equipment and material procurement of the facilities which were assigned to hospitalise patients with confirmed coronavirus infection as well as identified the facilities which are critically under-resourced with both ALV devices or high-pressure oxygen flasks necessary for ALV devices operation. I would also like to express my gratitude to Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for the chance of adequate therapy the patients have when they are hospitalised to such facilities in accordance with current treatment protocols. The devises donated by Rinat Akhmetov Foundation are the high-level devices allowing for artificial lung ventilation in patients with complicated coronavirus infection’, said Serhii Dubrov, member of Coronavirus Response Division, President of the Association of Anaesthesiologists, when handing over the equipment and protective means.

On the 28th of February, the Foundation donated a mobile artificial lung ventilation (ALV) device and oxygen concentrator to the MoH. This means that, for the moment, the MoH have received a total of 4 pieces of ALV devices and accessory oxygen concentrators each).

Additionally, protective means for medical professionals and staff have been delivered to Novi Sanzhary Health Resort and the previous week, Rinat Akhmetov Foundation donated ‘care boxes’ containing plaids, personal hygiene means, and robes for the persons evacuated from China.
