“Healthy Heart” project: to get assistance

22.11.2017

Cardiovascular diseases are the most often cause of death in Ukraine. A small occluder implant may rescue children diagnosed with valvular defect, but the cost of the device - one hundred thousand hryvnias – is unaffordable for many parents. Rinat Akhmetov Humanitarian Center provides help for children suffering from severe heart diseases and needing an operation to install an occluder.

A four-year-old Nikita from Kramatorsk happened to be one of these patients. The boy was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease. When he was three years old, cardiologists suggested an urgent expensive operation. Rinat Akhmetov Humanitarian Center responded to the request for help. The occluder was successfully installed, and now perfectly healthy Nikita returned home.

“This is the second life! Many thanks to Rinat Akhmetov for everything. We would not find so much money, but this operation was extremely necessary for the boy,” thanks Maxim Pakhomov, Nikita’s godfather.

Since 2017, the Center has launched the “Healthy Heart” project, whose goal is to help children cure congenital heart defects. The surgeries are performed by endovascular technique. Thanks to this method, the patient can forever forget about his or her diagnosis and recover quickly. During the operation of the project, 27 children were operated on. Another 3 children are waiting for their turn for the surgery in November.

The help of the Humanitarian Center is available for children under 18 living in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, as well as those living on the temporarily uncontrolled territory of Donbas.

The project provides for the heart surgeries for boys and girls diagnosed with an open arterial duct, an atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect.
