Rinat Akhmetov Foundation will build a modern laboratory in Donetsk for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in line with all international standards

16.05.2013

Within the “Stop TB in Ukraine. Regional Program” the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for Development of Ukraine plans to build a modern laboratory for TB diagnosis in Donetsk. This will be the first laboratory in Ukraine to meet international standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), in compliance with all the rules and regulations of the European Union for infection control. It shall apply modern technologies in the field of "clean rooms" that will completely eliminate risks of TB infecting by laboratory staff. The laboratory will be installed with the latest equipment for TB diagnosis, particularly, HAIN systems for molecular genetic TB diagnosis, providing detection of the entire spectrum of resistance to first and second line TB drugs within one day. Also, a separate training room will be created to teach laboratory technicians and bacteriologists; as well as convenient working and leisure environment will be ensured for laboratory staff.

Laboratories of such level exist in Germany, France and the countries of Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan). Now modern TB diagnostic laboratory will appear in Ukraine.

The decision to build such a lab was taken last year due to the need for improvement of outdated equipment of the functioning lab at Donetsk regional TB clinic that does not meet modern requirements in terms of infection control and separate area for molecular genetic tests.

“The new laboratory will be built "from scratch" in a separate building at the Donetsk regional TB clinic premises”, - says manager of “Stop TB in Ukraine” program of Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for Development of Ukraine, Denis Denisenko. The design and supervision over the construction will be performed by Czech-Ukrainian project organization "FAVEA engineering Kyiv". According to the concluded agreement between Rinat Akhmetov Foundation and "FAVEA engineering Kyiv" it is planned to design the lab this year, and to launch its construction the next one. In 2015, Ukrainians will receive modern TB laboratory in line with international standards. The total budget on lab construction constitutes UAH 18 million. The funding for this project is covered by Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for Development of Ukraine”.

Tests in the modern diagnostic laboratory will be available for all residents of Donetsk region by referral from a TB doctor. Also, patients on stationary and ambulatory TB treatment will be referred to this laboratory.
